Best Reports to Run After Bullpens

Several reports are useful after a bullpen session has been charted. Whether the session lasted 10 pitches or 100, the following reports are extremely valuable to pitchers. They both provide something all pitchers crave in practice - instant feedback:

1) The Pitcher Command Report (shown below) is probably the best report for post-bullpen sessions. Immediately following the bullpen, the Command Report can be given to each pitcher who threw. There are plenty of benefits to using this report after bullpens.

2) The Quality Locations Report is also excellent feedback after a bullpen session. It is different from the Command Report in that it does not matter where the intended spot was. The Quality Locations Report tells pitchers the percentage of pitches that were in "Quality" areas of the strike zone (at or near the corners and/or knees). It also gives the percentage of pitches that were in the heart of the zone, and those that were nowhere near the strike zone (non-competitive locations).

The benefits of the Pitcher Command Report are:

  • A Command Rating tells the pitcher how well they hit their spots. What a radar gun is to velocity, the command rating is to command.
  • Criteria can be selected to display specific pitch-types and targets to show how well they were hit.
Click here to see a sample showing fastballs intended down & in. Notice how this pitcher frequently misses on the opposite side of the plate to right-handed batters. Also notice the Command Rating changes automatically. This pitcher is a 46 overall, which is very good, but he needs to work on his Fastball Down/Away, which was 27.
Click here for another example of filtering pitch-types and intended locations. This time, we selected Curveballs that were intended Down in the zone.
  • The top part of the report shows where pitches actually ended up compared to where they were supposed to go. If you filter specific locations, you can see where a pitcher tends to miss his spot, which is valuable for teaching purposes.

Coaching Tip: Try having a "Pitcher Command Competition". Pitchers can throw bullpens and compete against one another for best command, or best quality. Ultimately, charting bullpen sessions is an excellent way to measure and encourage progress for every pitcher.
