Best Reports to Run After Batting Practice
Several reports are useful after a batting practice session has been charted. Whether
the session lasted 10 swings or 100, the following reports are extremely valuable
for instant performance feedback:
1) The
Hitter Ranking Report (shown below) is probably
the best report for post-batting practice sessions. Immediately following BP, the
Ranking Report can be posted to show who hit the most pitches hard that day.
2) The
Hitter Location Report,
can be generated with results displayed to show the locations in the zone that were
well-hit or not, missed, fouled, or taken.
3) The
Quality Locations Report,
although part of the Pitcher's Edge package shows how well hitters handle "Hitter's
Strikes" in the heart of the strike zone, "Quality Strikes" on the corners and knees,
and pitches swung on that were out of the strike zone.
Here is what coaches like best about the Hitter Ranking Report:
- It gets hitters competing with each other and themselves - every day there is a
chance to be at the top of the list, and every day there is a chance to do better
than you did the day before.
- It doesn't take a lot of data to get good feedback (you can generate Well-Hit of
STRIKES or SWINGS instead of AB's). That is a major benefit, especially when it
comes to single session feedback.
- BP goes quickly. You may only have time to chart basic actions, such as + (well
hit), - (not well hit), Str (Taken Strike), B (Taken Ball), F (Foul), or M (Swung
/ Missed). This will allow you to rank your hitters by Well-Hit Percent, Chase Percent,
Take Percent, and Miss Percent. Choosing not to chart the result, such as "Single"
or "Fly Out" is not a problem when generating the Hitter Ranking Report because
it can be based on Strikes, Swings, or Pitches, rather than At-Bats.
Today was Marco Fregoso's day. Who will it be tomorrow? How much better will our
team average be tomorrow? When PalmScout is used to chart practice activities such
as batting practice, players become motivated to perform as if it were a game. The
result is more productive work, and more fun.
Remember, too, that the Ranking Reports can be filtered by Location, Pitch Type,
and many other criteria. Hitters can be ranked in literally hundreds of ways. Here
are a few other examples that work well after BP:
- Well Hit of Outside Strikes (or any Location).
- Well Hit of Curveballs (or
any Pitch Type).
- Well Hit of pitches out of the zone swung on (Find out who
your "Bad Ball" hitters are).
- Chase Percent of Fastballs (or any Pitch Type).
-
Chase Percent of Pitches UP in the zone (or any Location).
- Take Percent of Strikes
The list goes on and on. More information on the Hitter Ranking Report can be found
here.
