Nashville,
Tenn. — The 60th annual American Baseball Coaches Association Convention
featured an all-time record 307 exhibitors who showcased the latest and
greatest in products for baseball coaches and players. This year marks
the sixth straight year Collegiate Baseball has rolled out its Best of
Show story which features the top new inventions that were displayed at
the ABCA Convention.
PalmScout
One of the most powerful programs being used in professional baseball
for statistical analysis has been provided by Inside Edge Scouting Services.
In the last year, Inside Edge has designed the PalmScout, an easy to use
tool that replaces the traditional pencil and paper method of charting
pitches. It brings the valuable infor-mation contained in pitching charts
to life.
You simply chart the game on a Palm Pilot at the ball park and then print
out reports which include superior graphic elements which pinpoint tendencies
by coaches, pitchers and hitters.
The features and capabilities include graphical reports on your own players
and opponents customized by count, pitch type, side, timeframe, etc. It
also includes efficient chart type, location, velocity, well hit, direction
and outcome.
In-game reports show pitch counts and key stats. Editing functions let
you correct charting errors as well.
Jerry Weinstein, pitching coach with Cal Poly SLO and one of the greatest
pitching coaches of our generation, is a big believer in this program.
“Palm Scout is the only tool use every day for practice and games.
This tool will make us all better coaches.”
This product was also the subject of a lengthy story in the October 1,
2004 edition of Collegiate Baseball by Kenny Kendrena, head baseball coach
at Bishop Amat H.S. (La Puente, Calif.).
He explained how PalmScout has been crucial to the development of his
players via feedback to hitters and pitchers in practice as well as games.
